The Capsim Capstone simulation spans 8 rounds, during which participants manage a sensor manufacturing company competing against five robust competitors, controlled either by AI or by other teams within the class.
Each round necessitates strategic decision-making across various functional areas including Research and Development (R&D), Marketing, Production, Human Resources (HR), Finance, and starting from Round 3, Total Quality Management (TQM).
1. For R&D:
Continuously update product specifications each round, focusing on increasing PFMN and decreasing SIZE.
Introducing new products in rounds 1, 2, or 3 is critical for long-term success.
Refer to the Industry and Condition report to determine optimal adjustments for product updates each round.
Utilize an Excel file for expedient R&D calculations each round. You can download the free Excel tool from the link provided in the comments.
You manage five products across different market segments with the following MTBF targets:
- Traditional: 17,500
- Low End: 14,000
- High End: 23,000
- Performance: 27,000
- Size: 21,000
Adjust each product as follows per round:
- Traditional: Increase PFMN by +0.7, decrease SIZE by -0.7
- Low End: Increase PFMN by +0.5, decrease SIZE by -0.5
- High End: Increase PFMN by +0.9, decrease SIZE by -0.9
- Performance: Increase PFMN by +1.0, decrease SIZE by -0.7
- Size: Increase PFMN by +0.7, decrease SIZE by -1.0
Additionally, consider adjusting according to the Drift Rate to optimize sales performance.
Refer to the Industry Condition report for insights into the ideal Drift Rate adjustments.
2. For marketing
Adjust prices for existing products and any new introductions each round.
Refer to the Courier report to review competitor prices.
Implement a $0.50 price reduction per round to maintain competitiveness.
Utilize the Courier report to assess customer preferences across product criteria within different market segments.
In marketing strategy, emphasize accurate sales forecasting. Refer to the Courier report for data on last round sales volumes per product, and adjust based on segment growth rates.
Price Setting Decisions:
Traditional Segment: Initiate pricing at $29.5.
Low-End Segment: Set pricing at $21.5.
High-End Segment: Establish pricing at $39.5.
Performance Segment: Determine pricing at $34.5.
Size Segment: Fix pricing at $34.5.
3. For Production
- This strategy is pivotal for winning the 8-round simulation.
- Compute the production plan as follows: Production Plan = Sales Forecast - Inventory. It's advisable to add 10% to mitigate stockouts if products sell well.
- Introduce new products in rounds 1, 2, and 3 to double sales and increase profits from rounds 4 to 8.
- Ensure to augment capacity for new products and progressively enhance automation each round.
Production Decision Settings
Round 1:
- Production Plan = (Sales Forecast - Inventory) * 115% (to prevent stockouts, adding 15% buffer).
- Automation Settings:
- Traditional: Increase to 6.5 - 8 - 9 - 10 from Round 1.
- Low End: Increase to 8 - 9 - 10 from Round 2.
- High End, Performance, and Size: Increase to 4-5-6 from Round 4 onwards.
Note: Adjust prices downwards and escalate Promo and Sales efforts if prioritizing higher sales in a specific segment.
4. For HR
- Use $3000 for recruitment and 40 hours for training in round 1 -2 -3 and 4
- Use $5000 for recruitment and 80 hours for training from round 5 to round 8
5. For Finance
- Use max three sources of funds in round 1-2-3 to support R&D, Marketing, Production expansion, automation increase (or use about $20000 each sources)
- From Round 4 to 6, use long term loans
- From Round 7 can buy back stock, pay loans, and pay dividends
6. For TQM
- Spend $1000 for each TQM initiatives
- Use for 4 rounds to gain max TQM effectiveness
